Hi Birders,
I've been given the opportunity to join my Uncle Jake Schas for 17 days in Toolik Alaska. While I'm here I will be working with a graduate student, learning botany techniques and helping her with field work. Today we spent 8 hours (of the almost 24 hours of daylight) taking leaf samples, and recording phenology data. Thanks to Uncle Jake for getting me up here!
Also, while I am here, I will be taking the opportunity to post for both Jake and myself.
I've been here since Monday July 21st, and I've seen 6 life birds. They are (in no particular order):
Snow Bunting
Spectacled Eider
Glaucous Gull
Long-tailed Jaeger
Lapland Longspur
Whimbrel
On Monday before and after I arrived in Toolik, Jake saw these birds for 23 species:
Pacific Loon
Tundra Swan
Greater-white Fronted Goose
Canada Goose
Greater Scaup
Spectacled Eider
Northern Harrier
Rough-legged Hawk
Semi-palmated Plover
Western Sandpiper
American Golden Plover
Least Sandpiper
Long-billed Dowitcher
Red-necked Phalarope
Long-tailed Jaeger
Glaucous Gull
Arctic Tern
Short-eared Owl
Cliff Swallow
Common Raven
American Pipit
Laplong Longspur
Snow Bunting
Lots more fun stuff still to come!!!
Happy Birding!!
